MILFORD
THEN...
Starting 200 years ago the people of Milford got busy milling and
building ships for the Great Lakes.
The grist and saw mills were powered by the
rushing waters of the Black River and
the finished ships were floated downstream to Lake Ontario. Milford was
a happening
place with several eating and drinking establishments. To keep a
resemblance of order
the village even had to build a "drunkards cage" to contain the worst
cases.
...AND NOW
Nowadays Milford is a quiet and cute little hamlet with historical
houses looking out over
the peaceful waters of the Mill pond. Besides the acclaimed Milford Bistro there is a
wonderful theatre, Mount Tabor Playhouse, with plays and musical
performance throughout the year. Just a few kilometres from the village
you'll find
Long Dog Winery,
probably the best in the County. And just downstream from us is Black
River Creek with Black
River Cheese Company, Vickis Veggies,
Pat's Jams
and Galloping Goat
Gallery.
Nearby is the Mariners
Museum for finding out all about
the region's rich maritime history. This is also the gateway to North
America`s most important
dive site with over 50 shipwrecks. Make a small detour to enjoy little
Bluff with its fantastic
views out over Waupoos Island.
On the other side of the island is Waupoos Estates Winery,
County Cider
Company and
Fifth Town Artisan
Cheese.
West of Milford in neighbouring Cherry Valley you will find the amazing
Bald
Photographer and just on the other side of East Lake
is Mad Dog gallery.
South towards beautiful Pt Petre is Pete's Stained glass, some of his
beautiful pieces
you can see in the Bistro's windows. The rest of our fine art is
supplied by one of the most interesting
galleries in the County, both for contemporary art and what they call
funktional art,
Covent Garden
Gallery / Funktional Art
in Bloomfield.
